The Explicit Value of Position

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Everyone talks about the value of position in hold em poker online: how in the end, it is less what cards you are dealt, and more how you push your spots. The button is typically known as the best position you can want to be in, since the only players who will act after you preflop are the blinds, and after the flop, you are always the last to act.

Why being last to act important?

At its most basic, poker is a game of information. The more you know about your opponent and how he treats his hand, the better equipped you’ll be to decide where you stand in relation to him, and therefore how best to act.

By acting last you see how your opponent moves, how much he bets, how he looks while betting, etc. Whereas they have no idea what you are going to do, you see all.

Your opponent has two choices acting before you: bet or check. Following an opponent’s action, then, based on what they’ve done, you can check to an opponent’s check, or bet at them; you can raise an opponent’s bet, if you find him weak; you can fold to an opponent’s bet, if you believe he has it. Your options open up. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.

Respect the Game

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

One of the things that tends to come with poker players of vast experience is a clear level of respect for the game. Partly because of their TV image, and partly because they truly respect poker as a game of skill, you don’t see a whole lot of major professional acting like idiots when it comes to the mechanics of the online poker game (Phil Hellmuth and Humbero Brenes excluded, among others). I really can’t stand to see players acting out at the online poker table like they are in the middle of a wrestling ring. I like to have fun as much as the next guy, but acting like a jerk over a bad beat or a tough draw is not only damaging for you as a player, but for the image of the game. We certainly have enough weight on the shoulders of poker in the legal sense than to have guys jumping around like they are little kids fighting over who gets the bigger slice of pizza. Let’s treat the game like it deserves to be treated: as an act and a tradition, one that has been going on for years and years. Anything less is just doing a disservice to everyone involved.

Poker Definitions: the Flop

Friday, September 4th, 2009

In Texas hold ‘em poker, perhaps the most important and vital part of any hands, besides each individual player’s hole cards, is the flop. The flop are the first three cards dealt as community cards for the table, which are used with the other players’ hole card to make the best five card poker hand. The flop is dealt after each players has received their hole cards, dealt two face down, and a round of betting entails. The flop is then dealt face up, three cards all at once or one at a time (the dealer usually will decide how to turn the cards over but there is no more betting until all three flop cards are exposed). The players then act for the next round of betting, and from there the hand is defined. The flop is where the majority of the online poker hand will be defined: pairs will flop their three of a kind, connectors will flop straights and suited cards flushes, draws will be established or not, and etc. Essentially, the way the hand goes down for the most part is defined by the flop. For the most part, the flop will decide the favorite to win the hand, though there are still two more cards to come, making the flop a large part of a hand (3 out of 7 possible cards to use, the most revealed at any time) but not the end-all be-all.

Stay out of the Washout, Bowl Competitively with the Right Bowling Balls

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Almost daily I meet an occasional bowler willing to play the game of bowling competitively for the first time. Should that be your situation, you’re in the midsts of a important time in learning the game as a true bowler. My “Next Steps” handbook to bowling perfection shouldn’t be ignored. The guys at a local bowling pro shop are there to assist their customers reach their bowling skills. It’s no surprise, knock the pins down to win! That’s a joke. Fine, if only it were that simple. It’s all good, we’ll make sure you’re bowling down the right lane.

You’ll definitely want to buy your own tailored a personalized bowling ball, which will do wonders! It’s not a sales pitch, it actually matters. There’s a reason its our number 1 recommendation, get your own ball fitted, and you’ll never go back. A properly selected bowling ball can make a substantial improvement in your game. Of course another critical matter is sliding out your final step in actual bowling shoes which don’t stink like desanitizer

Since you already purchased your supplies, here’s the second best bowling tip: aiming the ball. If you face the pins, try not to focus on your actual target, the pins. Aim for the the arrows like a sling shot. What’s the point? It is easier to hit a point that rests nearer. To take full advantage, make sure you stand in the a consistent place on the wood each time. Only then you can make small adjustements on your aim using the arrows in the lane.

As for hooks, for their desired pin action? It is our next best piece of bowling advice. The secret is the pricy reactive ball. Most us who were bown to bowl carry two or three bowling balls to roll ridiculous pin action, selected precisely for where they are. Word of warning: greenhorns should keep it simple, and avoid a ball that weighs a ton. Some avid bowlers opt for bowling balls featuring synthetic materials. Avoid the temptation, because these pro bowling balls regularly make even some well known talents look silly. With these tips you’re on the right track. A pro from our bowling shop will return shortly.

We play for our team (the “Strykers”) made up of morning shift for a major bowling ball retailer just outside Cincinnati. I chime in with advice to professional and amature bowlers on the web and at the lanes. Lastly, I have to give a shout out to our crew at the center.

Las Vegas: Fun, Gambling and Shows

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Going to Las Vegas is all about having fun to excess. Whether you want to spend all your money in the casinos and slot machines, living it up in a grand hotel or seeing superstars in concert, you won’t want to do things by halves. You can splash out on beautiful new clothes and hairdos, and maybe bump into a star or two by the swimming pool. You can dine out in the best restaurants in the city then sit back and enjoy the cabaret entertainment in the evenings.

Many of the world’s greatest singers have performed on stage in Vegas, including Barry Manilow, Frank Sinatra and Elton John. If you want to see some of these entertainers yourself you’ll need to buy one or two Las Vegas show tickets . Big name stars don’t come cheap but splashing out on expensive tickets is all part of the fun, especially if it’s a once in a lifetime treat.

If you enjoy the casino life you might even be able to rub shoulders with the rich and famous at the roulette wheel. Even if you’re not lucky enough to win you’ll have some great memories to treasure, and great memories are worth more than any amount of money. You’ll be able to go home and tell your friends who you saw at the Poker table or who you spotted coming out of one of the Las Vegas Hotels . Whatever you enjoy doing you’ll find plenty of it in Vegas. Your pockets may be lighter but at the end of the day that doesn’t matter, you’ve enjoyed yourself to the max, and that’s what vacations are all about.

Halloween Cookie Icing Recipe

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Maybe I’m alone in this but I’ve gotten sick of Halloween candy. It’s so boring and unoriginal. In order to exercise some creativity, I decided to give out homemade Halloween cookie treats to friends and family last year, instead of candy and it was a big hit. It’s not so much about the cookie or its flavor or how it tastes. It’s all about the decorations, of course. Check out this recipe for easy easy frosting to frost your cookies or cupcakes. It’s a great addition to your Halloween party food spread. You’ll only need a few ingredients and basic kitchen tools and a drop of elbow grease for the whipping.

2 teaspoons of lemon juice
1 cup of egg whites
5 cups of sifted and powdered sugar

1. In a big, metal and chilled (in the fridge, 20 min) bowl, beat the egg whites fast and rigorously until the egg whites form peaks. Use a cold whisk. You can also use an electric mixer with a wisk attachment, if you have one. Bit it’s not necessary.

2. Slowly mix in the powdered sugar. If you’re doing the mixing by hand, add about 1/4 to a 1/2 cup at a time. If using the electric professional mixer, just sprinkle it in slowly. Once all of the sugar is added and it’s well incorporated, add that lemon juice in and mix it all up so that it’s very thick, like thick toothpaste. If it’s not thick enough, add a little more powdered sifted sugar until it is.

3. This icing can be stored, if it isn’t used right away or if there is leftovers, for up to five days. Just cover the bowl and place it in teh fridge.

4. You can color the frosting to any color, using the right amount of well mixed food coloring. Always ice anything, cookies, cake, cupcakes, with room temperature frosting for easy spreading.

Continue Betting

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

One of the standard strategies in NL Texas Holdem is to continue bet your prelop raises on the flop. If you are heads up, your opponent will miss the flop about 70% of the time. This means that on a majority of any flop that you see heads up, your opponent missed. The concept of continue betting, is that in this majority of the time, your poker opponent will fold to you.

If you raise preflop and get a call, your opponent may have you beat already. As long as they don’t have a pocket pair, the odd are still in our favor that he will not connect with the flop and a continuation of your preflop aggression will win the pot. In any case, a continuation bet after the flop will at least give you some information, if not the money in the pot.

I see a lot of poker players slowing down after getting called on a continuation bet. They were hoping to win already, and that plan got foiled. If they are in first position and now check the turn card after you’ve called them on the flop, chances are they are ready to go away. You can make a good sized bet and probably win, even if you have nothing. Keep in mind, if you are 70% to miss the flop, so is the other guy.
