The Explicit Value of Position
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009Everyone talks about the value of position in hold em poker online: how in the end, it is less what cards you are dealt, and more how you push your spots. The button is typically known as the best position you can want to be in, since the only players who will act after you preflop are the blinds, and after the flop, you are always the last to act.
Why being last to act important?
At its most basic, poker is a game of information. The more you know about your opponent and how he treats his hand, the better equipped you’ll be to decide where you stand in relation to him, and therefore how best to act.
By acting last you see how your opponent moves, how much he bets, how he looks while betting, etc. Whereas they have no idea what you are going to do, you see all.
Your opponent has two choices acting before you: bet or check. Following an opponent’s action, then, based on what they’ve done, you can check to an opponent’s check, or bet at them; you can raise an opponent’s bet, if you find him weak; you can fold to an opponent’s bet, if you believe he has it. Your options open up. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.
